FIREFIGHTERS & EMT

"Fire doesn't hand out participation trophies."

How can getting in shape help you as a firefighter or EMT?

Find out how getting in shape can not only save your life, but better your professional performance.

Physically Prepared

Strength training, regular exercise & better rest makes you fit & more alert for a physically demanding firefighter or EMT career.  As a firefighter or EMT, you ask a lot of your muscles, bones, lungs & mind while being in the fight or flight state of mind. This creates physical & mental stress even if you love your job. The more in shape you are, the better your mind & body are able to cope & recover after a difficult rescue.

Increased Energy

When your body is able to function better & more efficiently, it allows for the extra energy that would have been spent on basic functions & tasks - to be spent on other things. This could include hanging out with friends, checking off some of those honey-to-do lists, or more quality time spent with the kids after long day at work. By physically functioning better, you increase your endurance & quality of life.

Less Injury

Studies have shown 48% of injuries during fireground operations and 56% of non-fireground injuries were strains and sprains (out of 58,835 firefighter injuries in 2017). By becoming physically fit, you reduce your chances of getting injured & become a team member your squad can always rely on. Staying in shape helps prepare you for lifting and moving with a reduced chance of injury for both firefighters & EMT. Additionally, if you spend a lot of your time in an ambulance driving around, you're spending a lot of time sitting. It's important to find time to stretch and exercise to help prevent back pain and keep your muscles strong.

Mental Wellbeing

Exercise combats effects of physical and mental stress while improving your  brain’s response to stress. You may not be able to reduce the daily stressors in your busy & hectic day, but you can change the way you respond. At the same time, increased confidence & lowered stress chemicals help to manage the symptoms of depression & anxiety. In some cases, even 30 minutes of exercise a day is even more effective than medication! Saving lives as a firefighter or EMT is an admirable career, however, depression and anxiety can severely impact your ability to perform effectively.
